Deep in the forests north of Petoskey, Michigan lies a burnt down laboratory. Nature around it seems unwilling to claim it, acting as if the rectangular area was simply just a void in the Earth. Merjema, acting as lead investigator for the case by the United States Agency for Paranormal Investigation, is tasked with investigating the building and the odd scraps of paper found within. What is known for certain was that five bodies were found, but six are mentioned in papers: Root, Newt, Rex, Acrylic, Puppet, and Ink. The group seemed to refer to itself as the "Death Project", dedicated to the eradication of death.
The story uses an unconvential format of diary entries, field reports, autopsies, detective notes, and other items.
