As a wise cicada once said, "WWHRRRREEEE EEEE WHRRWREEEEEE WHRREEEEEERRR."
And to me that's what they are all about!! Cicadas tend to get a bad wrap for their sheer multitude, size, and noisiness which is... yeah true. BUT they are also cool asf!! I hope these pages can give you some more insight into these lil loud freaks!
Periodic vs. Annual
When you read news headlines about large cicada broods emerging in the United States, this is referring to the genus Magicicada, which emerge every 13 to 17 years. Magicicada emergences are called broods; brood classification is based off geography and the years of emergence.
Every cicada that is NOT Magicicada (with the exception of Chremistica ribhoi of India, which emerges every 4 years, and Raiateana knowlesi of Fiji, which emerges every 8 years) are considered annual cicadas, meaning they emerge every year. This doesn't meant that the cicada lives for a year; it just means that cicada species can be seen every year.
